People with depression typically feel sad and frequently experience difficulty enjoying activities that were previously pleasurable. We all have times when we feel sad, but if these feelings persist for two or more weeks you may be suffering from depression. People can feel depressed after a difficult or painful experience, such as a loss or a major disappointment. In other cases, there may not be a clear reason why you feel depressed. Symptoms of depression can include: weight loss or gain, difficulty getting enough sleep or sleeping too much, trouble concentrating, frequent feelings of fatigue, feeling sluggish or jittery, feeling worthless or guilty, feelings of hopelessness, and thoughts about death or suicide. Depression can come on over a matter of days or it may build gradually over a longer period of time.
People whose immediate family members have suffered from depression or anxiety are more likely to become depressed at some point in their lives. Left untreated, depression can become very painful and may interfere significantly with a person’s life. Fortunately, many people with depression can be helped by treatment.
Studies show that many people with depression do not seek help. However, with help, most people will experience moderate to significant relief from the symptoms of depression. Perhaps why many people who have symptoms of depression do not seek help is because depression is not always an unchanging experience. You may feel better for a few days between periods of feeling depressed, and this may lead you to think you're not depressed when you actually are.
